Microneedling

Microneedling in Connecticut with Dr. Wilfred Brown and Carolyn Brown, APRN

Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or PRP, is a procedure used to promote the production of collagen and elastin to give you younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging. The SkinPen uses a sterile tip containing 12 tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin. This initiates the skin’s repair process to naturally produce collagen and elastin, ideal for smoothing fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, traumatic scars, and stretch marks. Microchannels created by the treatment allow for optimal absorption of topical products or Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), enhancing their effects in the deeper layers of skin.

What Can a Microneedling Accomplish?

PRP, or platelet rich plasma, is a concentration of platelets in the blood that are crucial to wound healing. When used for skin rejuvenation, PRP releases growth factors into the skin to expedite your body’s own repair process and stimulate new collagen and elastin formation. It can be combined with microneedling to stamp your own PRP into the skin where its rich growth factors will help to stimulate collagen and elastic tissue naturally to create moist, smoother, and more radiant skin. Studies have shown that platelets can stimulate your stem cells, which results in the growth of new skin.

PRP is derived from your own blood (thus the “vampire facial” reference). Approximately two teaspoons of blood are drawn from your arm and placed inside a centrifuge, a device used to separate the blood components and increase platelet concentration. After numbing the treatment area with topical cream, the SkinPen “stamps” the skin creating tiny channels along the surface to injure the skin and stimulate the body’s healing mechanism. In order to help speed and intensify the repair and rejuvenation of your skin, your own processed serum (PRP) is injected with the MicroPen into the dermis and epidermis layers of the skin and is also applied topically. The concentrated platelets release growth factors and other enzymes to provide nourishment to the skin in order to repair and build new skin in the areas where microneedling has been performed. During the treatment, the microneedles can be adjusted to penetrate the skin at targeted depths, allowing for customized treatment depending on your desired results and the severity of your condition.

What Are the Benefits of Microneedling?

Microneedling is also used in the treatment of scars and stretch marks. For treating scars, the SkinPen is used to break up the fibrous tissues of the scar while the PRP spurs the growth of healthy tissue. For treating stretch marks, microneedling creates damage over the thinned skin of the stretch mark while the PRP promotes growth of thicker skin.

Microneedling can be used on all areas of the body and is safe for all skin tones. Downtime varies according to the depth of the treatment. Results from aggressive treatment will last longer, achieving noticeable facial rejuvenation even months after the procedure, while less aggressive treatment will produce results with little to no downtime.

SkinPen

SkinPen is the first FDA-cleared microneedling device to treat acne scarring and wrinkling of the neck. It also helps to minimize hyperpigmentation, stretch marks, and the appearance of surgical scars.

SkinPen treatments are minimally invasive procedures employing a pen-like handpiece containing 14 tiny needles that create thousands of micro-injuries. which stimulate your body’s natural healing process by releasing growth factors and boosting collagen and elastin production.

We recommend at least three SkinPen treatments for optimal results. After the skin is numbed with a topical anesthetic cream for approximately 45 minutes, the actual procedure takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the area(s) treated. We typically space treatment sessions four to six weeks apart.

The treatment boasts little downtime, and unlike other microneedling methods, it is safe for all skin tones and types.

You will start to see the initial benefits within a week of your first session, though the body’s collagen and elastin stimulation occurs over 3-6 months as your body complete its skin renewal process.

After your initial treatment series, Dr. Brown recommends maintaining your smooth complexion with touch-up SkinPen sessions quarterly or biannually to maximize and extend results.
